Just registered today and I have a couple of questions

by 105437 » Wed Jun 24, 2015 3:11 pm

I'm considering Sighthound as the "brains" of my camera system. I'd like to know if it's possible to just view a live stream from any camera remotely via my iPhone or MacBook. If so, is this connection secure using HTTPS protocol? Thanks

Hello 105437,

We do have a remote access feature which allows you to view all of your cameras and clips from a remote location using a web browser or our mobile app. For details on how to enable remote access please see this article: https://www.sighthound.com/support/how- ... ote-access

If you haven't already, please feel free to download and try Sighthound Video for free at https://www.sighthound.com/download

The remote access feature uses HTTP which is no different than most IP cameras.

Regards,

-Devin

Thanks Devin, so the live stream is viewable, not just recorded motion events etc. Viewing the live stream is a must for my application. I probably won't download the app until I have my cables run and cameras in place. So when accessing the live stream or recorded events from the mobile app or laptop, is my username and password transmitted in plain text?

Hi 105437,

You are correct that both live streams as well as clips are viewable via remote access. HTTPS support for remote access is high on our wish list and something we're working on for a future update.

Forgot to mention, we provide the free trial to encourage people to download and try out the app and live with it a bit to see if it meets their needs. It's so much easier to get a feel for the app by playing with it for a few minutes than by reading all of the documentation. If you'd like to do so and need more time later once you've purchased/set up all of your cameras it's no problem, just let us know and we'll be glad to get you another trial then.

Thanks Ryan! I'm hoping to have wires run this weekend but don't expect to have cameras up until mid next month. I still need to know about whether or not login credentials are transmitted in plain text each time I access a live stream or recording from remote. Thanks!

Hi 105437,

As mentioned above remote access currently communicates over HTTP. HTTP is not an encrypted protocol. We have plans to introduce HTTPS support in a future update.

All remote access traffic is direct from your client to your Sighthound Video server. None is routed through any Sighthound properties, which makes enabling HTTPS a bit trickier. This is why, for example, you must explicitly open a port in your router/firewall if you'd like to allow access outside your network - your videos do not go through our infrastructure to be re-broadcast, we have no access to your data. It also means, among other things, that we can't simply embed our trusted SSL certificates in the application for the web server there to host, as they could be extracted and maliciously used. The challenges are not insurmountable and it is something we are working on.

Best,
- ryan

Ryan/Devin... I have another question. Does Sighthound support sending both email and SMS motion detection alerts? If so, can I configure it to send emails and texts to more than one email address and smartphone?

Thanks!
