iPhone app can't connect

by TimD » Fri Feb 05, 2016 8:08 pm

I've installed the basic licensed version with one camera. The software runs fine on the PC, but I consistently get:

Error Code: -1001 Description: Error connecting to the server: Connection timed out.

This happens trying to connect to my local network address. I haven't gotten beyond that point to trying to set up port forwarding or get an external address working. One step at a time...

I can connect to the local address (127.0.0.1 and the 192.168.1.x addresses) from a browser on the local machine, but nothing else on my network (other PCs, smart phones, tablets) can reach it via browser, nor will the iPhone app connect.

I assume that there may be a local Windows firewall rule on the PC blocking it, so I've tried opening explicit TCP and UDP rules to allow port 8848, with no luck. There appear to already be some Sighthound Video firewall rules allowed, and I did opt to allow it to make Windows Firewall rule modifications during installation.

Any suggestions what could be preventing me from being able to connect remotely from within my own network?

Hi TimD,

It does sounds as though some firewall is blocking Sighthound. If you could send us a bug report by going to Help > Report a Problem I'd be happy to investigate your logs for anything unusual. Be sure to link to this forum post so we know it is you.

Regards,

-Devin

I'll work on submitting a bug report, but in the meantime, I've confirmed that it's a local Windows Firewall issue by turning off Windows Firewall, after which I was able to connect from other devices on the local network. Still getting nothing but "Attempting to connect" for the remote access address.

And more progress. After disabling the local Windows firewall, I disabled and re-enabled remote access within the local application, and it finally started providing the external remote address. I confirmed I was able to access the stream and clips from my iPhone, both on and off the local network. Would be nice to re-enable the firewall with the correct rules in place.

Bur report submitted as requested.

I'm having the same problem. Is this resolved?

If I refer to the windows firewall setup in the KB it lists allowing access for 4 different sighthound applications. But in my windows firewall only the Sighthound Video shows up. Not sure if that has anything to do with it.

I found something that ended up working for me.
I had to add rules to the firewall manually. Here are the steps.

    1) Go to Windows Firewall
    2) Select "Advanced setting" in the left column
    3) in the new window select "Inbound Rules" in the left column
    4) Click "New Rule.." to the right
    5) select Program then next
    6) paste "C:\Program Files (x86)\Sighthound Video\Sighthound XNAT.exe" in the "this program path" box with no quotes
    7) click next until you see "Name" give it a name.
    8) Repeat this for these as well:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Sighthound Video\Sighthound Web.exe"
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Sighthound Video\Sighthound Agent.exe"
