I literally just registered for the forum to say thank you! Great idea and thanks for posting. Worked great on my vmware VM running sighthound, which is also on a RAID5 SSD array.

Hey no problem :) It has been working really well for me setup this way and the wear level has not gone up anymore since doing it, even with running 26 cameras now.

This is excellent, thank you Mike!! Bookmark added. :D Will definitely use this information on my future Sighthound server.

EDIT: Testing SH on a VM under ESXi running 5x 720p streams. The disk utilization dropped dramatically after applying the RAM disk fix. The yellow area in the graph below shows shutting down SH, applying the configuration change and then (re)starting SH. Dramatic difference to disk I/O after that point.

Where is the corresponding folder of the following in the Mac version? This is from the opening post:

The other type of temporary storage is the one we are interested with. It is stored in the folder:

C:\Users\*Your Username*\AppData\Local\Sighthound Video\videos\tmp\

On OSX it would be located at - /Users/<your user name>/Library/Application Support/Sighthound Video/. Note you will need to make hidden folders visible to reach this location.

To access hidden library folders on OSX:
* From the Finder, select the Go menu at top of the screen, and choose Go to Folder.
* In the window that opens, enter ~/Library, and click Go.

I just don't understand why we don't have the option to say where we can save the tmp folder.

I've moved up one directory and created a symbolic link to videos in the directory (So Sighthound doesn't try to create it) and the system is even faster. (Clip list is instant even from remote)

If Sighthound would create thumbnails based on a schedule you wouldn't have to wait for that to populate fast.
