New Dedicated PC - thoughts?

by mattcampy » Mon Oct 26, 2015 5:10 pm

Hey I am looking for Sighthound community and/or staff guidance for a nice PC build to run Sighthound with up to four-3MP cameras.

Here is a basic run down of what I'm considering (more details here: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/zhspTW - note I already have a 4TB Purple HDD I'm planning on reusing)

CPU: Intel Core i5-4460 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor
Memory: Crucial Ballistix Sport 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Storage for OS: PNY CS1211 240GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Storage for Video: Western Digital 4TB Purple
POE Switch: TP-LINK TL-SG1008P 8-Port Giagbit PoE Switch, 4 POE ports, IEEE 802.3af, Max Output 53W
OS: Windows 8.1 (does Sighthound run on 10?)

From my modest understanding of the software, it seems CPU and Memory are the two most important variables in a machine to be able to process the motion detection. Dedicated GPU won't help?

Hello mattcampy,

You are correct in that CPU and Memory are both important to consider when running more than one or two cameras. The system specs you listed should be able to easily handle 4 high resolution cameras. If you haven't already, I'd recommend taking a look at our system requirements article which contains more details as well as concrete examples which you can compare against: https://www.sighthound.com/support/system-requirements

To answer your other questions: At this time Sighthound Video does not make use of dedicated GPU's and it can run on Windows 10.

Regards,

-Devin

I have an Intel NUC NUC5i5RYH which has the following:

CPU: Intel Core i5-5250U, # of Cores 2, # of Threads 4, Processor Base Frequency 1.6 GHz, Max Turbo Frequency 2.7 GHz
Memory: Kingston HyperX Impact Black 8GB Kit (2x4GB) 1866MHz DDR3L
Storage for OS: Samsung 850 EVO 250 GB M.2 SSD
Storage for Video: Corsair Flash Voyager GTX 128GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive (FAST!)
OS: Windows 7

I am using 3 IP Cameras from HikVision:
1 x DS-2CD2432F-IW which is a 3MP IP Camera running @ 1080p @ 30fps
2 x DS-2CD2042WD-I which is a 4MP IP Camera running @ 1080p @ 30fps

And while SightHound is running in the background, my CPUs are pegged at 100%. There are three Sighthound Agent.exe processes (for each ip camera i suppose) each running at avg 28%.

I am seriously thinking of upgrading to a faster CPU Intel Core i7-5557U. The Intel Core i7-5557U is a fast dual-core processor (Processor Base Frequency 3.1 GHz, Max Turbo Frequency 3.4 GHz) so hopefully that will help. Don't want to get a i7 Quad-Core because I don't want a full fledge system... just want a simple little workhorse so thinking about upgrading to an Intel NUC5i7RYH. Lets see how it goes. :)

Just to update:

I pretty much just upgraded my CPU from an Intel i5-5250U, Dual Core, 1.6 GHz (Turbo Frequency @ 2.7 GHz) to the faster but still a Dual Core Intel i7-5557U, 3.1 GHz (Turbo Frequency @ 3.4 GHz) and it did make a difference. With the same setup of 3 cameras all running at 1080p @30fps my CPU Total Load is on avg 56% where each 'Sighthound Agent.exe' process (one for each camera) takes on avg. 15% load.

...however, if I were to add another camera I would get an i7 with Quad-Cores.

And just to share, I did end up getting the Intel NUC5i7RYH.
