Whenever a major new version of Sighthound Video comes out, we get existing users who try to buy it. Don’t. If you bought the software within the last twelve months the latest version is free. Even if your support subscription ran out, it is almost certainly going to be cheaper to bring it current than to buy the software again.
Why do we do it like this?
At heart Sighthound is an enterprise software company. Most of our business is with companies, and we prefer the enterprise support model to the consumer model where you have to keep buying the new version. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve bought software and then had to shell out again for it. With Sighthound, as long as you have a current support contract, the new major version is free. Bug fix releases are free even without a support subscription. I know some folks will always want software to be free, and if we had Apple’s hardware sales I’m sure we could make Sighthound Video free too.
We spent a year on SV 4.0. It is almost completely rewritten. I said in the press release that we changed everything except the UI. With a new architecture and audio now built in, we can make further improvements more quickly. I hope you like it.
